--- Shareware Concept:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to a myriad of benefits.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
--- Disclaimer / Agreement
Users of Contact Manager must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
Contact Manager is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the
use of Contact Manager.
Contact Manager is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do
not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using Contact Manager and continue to use it after a 30 day
trial period, you must make a registration payment to DataTek Computer
Services.
Commercial users of Contact Manager must register and pay for their copies of
Contact Manager within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting DataTek Computer Services.
Anyone distributing Contact Manger for any kind of remuneration must first
contact DataTek Computer Services at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and
such distributors may begin offering Contact Manager immediately. However
DataTek must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date
with the latest version of Contact Manager.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Contact Manager along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of Contact Manager along with other benefits described below.
--- ASP Ombudsman Statement:
"This program is produced by DataTek Computer Services, a member of the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support
for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover
Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to
ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536."
--- Installation:
To install Contact Manager (CM), simply create a sub-directory and
decompress the distribution file to this sub-directory. For the purpose
of example we will assume that the user is copying the Contact Manager .ZIP
(CMXXXXX.ZIP) file from drive A to drive C. You will have to substitute
whatever drive you intend to use.
Change to drive C type C: [press Enter]
make sure you're in
the root directory type CD\ [press Enter]
create the sub-directory type MD CM [press Enter]
change to this new
sub-directory type CD CM [press Enter]
copy the compressed file
to the sub-directory type COPY A:\CMXXXXX.ZIP C: [press Enter]
de-compress the file type PKUNZIP CMXXXXXX.ZIP [press Enter]
delete the .ZIP file type DEL CMXXXXX.ZIP [press Enter]
That's it!
--- Overview:
Contact Manager is a complete electronic tracking system to keep up with
customer/clients. CM is mouse aware but NOT mouse dependent and uses
intuitive screen design to make data entry and editing fast, easy,
efficient and productive. All data for each client is contained on a
single screen.
Contact Manager creates one database which you can sub-divide into groups
for organizational purposes. The program is mouse aware so you may use the
keyboard function keys or use the mouse to click on the menu to activate
the desired task.
--- Starting The Program:
Start the program by typing 'CM' at the DOS prompt.
The following screen will appear. In the registered version your name and
serial number will appear and the question "Would you like to print the
order form?" will not appear.
Press 'Y' to print the order form and 'N' to skip the order form and enter
the program.

NEARLY every field to end edit mode.
F4 - Update Record - Use this key to change existing data by advancing through
the fields one at a time. Pressing 'ENTER' will NOT clear a field. Use 'Alt-C'
to clear a field and 'Alt-R' to restore information to a field cleared in
error.
**Note: You may also change data by clicking on the field you wish to change.
When done, click anywhere on the screen to stop editing that field. Mouse
editing will not advance you through the fields in sequence. If you're not
using a mouse you may press 'ESC' at NEARLY every field to end edit mode.
**Note: Two additional keys are available while editing, Alt-C - Clears a
field completely, Alt-R will Restore the field just cleared as long as you
have not exited the field.
F5 - Tag/Untag - Used to tag and untagged record or untag a tagged record.
Tag is used for some printing operations, Add Group Comments, & Mail Merge.
You may also click on the 'TAG' box at the top of the screen to change the

or all the records in a group if Match Group was used prior to using this
option. A gas gauge below the 'Match Group' box shows your progress.
F7 - Match Group - CM can separate records in groups assigned by you. To
restrict viewing to only the records in a specific group, use this option.
A list of valid groups will be displayed and you may either use the arrow
keys or the mouse to select which group you wish to view. You may also
select a group by clicking on the 'MATCH GROUP' box in the lower right
section of the screen. The Match Group box is 2 columns by 10 lines. If you
have more than 20 groups you may view the additional groups by using the
arrow keys. The data in the box will scroll to accommodate your viewing.
*NOTE: The default group is 'ALL' this displays all entries for all groups.
To return to the default group from a specific group, select 'ALL' in
the match groups box.
F8 - List Groups - Used to view a list of the existing groups, click
anywhere on the screen or press 'ENTER' to see additional groups or close the
box.

Alt-F1 - Re-Index - CM has a built in function to compress the files and
discard any deleted records. Use this function from time to time to clean
up the data files. Also removes incorrect group names that were originally
misspelled and have been corrected. Re-index will run automatically if CM
cannot find a record for a 'Match Group' search.
Alt-F2 - DOS Mail Merge - This option creates a Mail Merge file of all
TAGGED records for use with various word processors. The format for the
merge file is:
* Record Start
Company Name
Address #1
Address #2
City, State Zip[-Zip+4]
** Record End
You will be prompted for the merge file name. The file will be created in the
CM directory. Since you assign the name, you can create multiple merge files.
Alt-F3 - Add Group Cmnt - This option allows you to add a single line comment
to all TAGGED records.
Alt-F4 - Backup Data - Copies the DATA.DAT file to DATA.BAK and INDEX.DAT to
INDEX.BAK.
Alt-F5 - Restore Data - Copies all data files previously saved from the .BAK
files to the .DAT files. WARNING: Restore will ask you if you are sure you
want to continue. If you choose Y you existing data WILL BE OVERWRITTEN with
the data previously saved.
Alt-F6 - Search Forward - Use this key to search for a keyword. Search starts
at record number 1 and ascends through the file sequentially. When a match is
found, CM asks if you if you want to 'Use This One?', Press Y or N or click
on the Y or N. CM looks for the keyword in the Company Name, City, and
Contact Name fields only. As you are searching a 'gas gauge' will appear
below the Match Group Field displaying CM's progress through the file.
Alt-F7 - Search Backward - Same as Search Forward except that this option
starts at the last record in the file and descends through the file to
record number 1. When a match is found, CM asks if you if you want to 'Use
This One?', Press Y or N or click on the Y or N. CM looks for the keyword in
the Company Name, City, and Contact Name fields only. As you are searching a
'gas gauge' will appear below the Match Group Field displaying CM's progress
through the file.

copies, and a contact #. The extra feature included here is that you may
print the labels in ZIP Code order. (Handy for bulk mailing purposes!)
F4: Tagged Reports: This feature will print reports for all tagged records in
the database. You will need to select a printer, number of copies, and tell
Contact Manager if you want the comments section included on the reports. If
you include comments, CM will print one record per page otherwise it will

to be printed in ZIP Code order.
F6: Group Reports: This feature will print reports for every record in the
group you are currently in. Once again you will need to select a printer,
number of copies, and to tell Contact Manager if you wish to include the
comments section on the reports. If you include comments, CM will print one
record per page otherwise it will print 2 records per page.
F7: Follow-Up Report - This handy feature will print a list of the records
who have an upcoming follow up date entered in their record. This list will
include the Group, Company Name, Last Edit Date and the follow up date. You
will need to select a printer, the number of copies to print and a range of
dates for CM to print. (Ex. If you only want to print follow-ups for 9/93,
you would enter 090193 in Start Date and 093093 in End Date.)
F8: Activity Report - This report will print a list of records that have
been edited between two selected dates. You select a printer, number of
copies, enter a start date, enter an end date and that's all. Start and End
dates here refer to the Last Edit Date, not the Follow-Up date.
F9: Mail Merge - This option will print a previously created DOS Mail Merge
List.
F10: Quit - This key will exit the Print options menu.
You may cancel any print option by pressing F10 at the following fields:
Printer #
# of Copies
Contact #
Start Date
End Date
Zip Code Order
--- Zip Code Sorting:
CM allows you to sort labels by Zip Code. There are memory constraints to
be concerned with when sorting large numbers of records. CM now checks for
enough available memory before starting a sort routine, thereby avoiding a
system lock-up. If CM detects that you do not have enough memory to sort a
large database, try printing labels by groups. While not a perfect solution,
it will still make the job manageable and accomplish the desired result with
very little extra work.
--- Error Codes:
Error Description/Solution

the drive. Contact your service representative.
53 File Not Found - A file that Contact Manager needs can't be
found.
57 Device I/O Error - An error has occurred between your computer and
your hard drive. Contact your service representative.

--- History:
11-15-93
Version 3.00 adds some new features and fixes an old problem that has annoyed
us for months. We added the gas gauge feature to the mass tag and mass untag
functions so you can graphically see how far you are in these processes. We've
added information windows when printing labels and reports that tell you when
the selected function is printing. When the window disappears you can continue
working on CM. We've added the ability to specify the name of the mail merge
file. So now instead of CM naming the file 'MAILMRG.DAT' you can name it
whatever you like and have as many different merge files as you like. We
finally fixed an intermittent problem. Occasionally, if you tried to set
'Match Group' to a group for which there were no records, CM would lock into
a repeating search cycle. This would happen when a user deleted all the
records in a group and did not run the reindex routine. When this happened
you had to reboot to clear the problem. Now, we have installed a limiting
watchpoint. If CM cannot find a record that matches the group you specified,
CM will halt the search and automatically run the re-index routine to update
your index file. CM will then set the match group to 'ALL' and display record
number 1 in the file. Fixed a small display bug in the mass tag/untag routine.
Fixed a small bug in v.2.70's new report printing routines. When printing
comment, CM would still try to print 2 records per page depending on a few
factors. This now works properly. We also added the ability to save a record
from any field if you do not have a mouse. Prior to version 3.00 when adding
or editing a record you had to 'Enter' through every field on the screen and
could only save a record from the comments field if you did not have a mouse.
Now you can save a record from any field by pressing the 'ESC' key. Also
changed the mass tag messages to specify 'Mass Tag' or 'Mass Un-Tag'. We also
made a few minor changes to the error handler to allow you to continue working
in cases where non-fatal errors occurred. Previously if the printer was
offline and you tried to print you would receive an error message identifying
the error and asking you to [A]bort or [R]etry. If you choose abort, CM would
end and return you to DOS. It now will send you back to the view window and
cancel the print request.
11/05/93
Version 2.70 changes the Print Group Reports and Print Tagged Reports sections
to print 2 records per page when comments are NOT included and 1 record per
page when comments ARE included.
11-01-93
Version 2.60 is a maintenance release that changes some internal code to
make the program run faster.
09-15-93
Version 2.05 corrects a bug that caused CM to re-arrange record numbers when
the first record was deleted and the file re-indexed. While this did not
cause a loss of data it was annoying enough to require correction. We also
added an error routine for zip code sorting. ZC sorting can take a LOT of
memory when large numbers of records are involved. CM will handle up to
3000 records without a problem, 3000 to 4000 can get hairy and over 4000
records is also impossible. We have added a watch point to check for enough
memory before attempting a large zip-code sort procedure and now allow the
user to abort the procedure when the memory requirements will be exceeded.
08-28-93
Version 2.01 corrects a bug in the Match Group selection box. The bug would
not recognize a Match Group of ALL.
08-23-93
Version 2.0 corrects a bug in the Last Edit Date Field. This version also
adds the Pop-Up Calculator and Pop-Up Calendar to the features list and
the ability to restrict the follow-up report to a range of dates.
08-15-93
Version 1.72 corrects two bugs. When mass tagging or untagging, the current
screen was not being updated. The Function keys were not activating the
correct functions in all circumstances. Both of these bug have now been
corrected.
08-05-93
Version 1.71 is a minor bug fix from version 1.70. A spacing bug developed
when printing labels. This problem has now been fixed.
--- Support:
DataTek Computer Services in a small company that I run part-time from my
home. Like many people I have a regular job that keeps my family fed. I am
usually available every night between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm Eastern time and
from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm on weekends. Occasionally I go out for an evening or
go on vacation, but my answering machine is ALWAYS on and I will return your
call assuming you leave a number and the best time to call you.
I will be just as happy to help Shareware users as I am to help registered
users, however, assuming there is a list of users for me to call, registered
users will be moved to the top of it. Fair is fair. As far as I'm concerned
support is perpetual.
You can contact DataTek in any of the following ways:
Phone: (215) 374-2097 during the hours listed above or leave a message at
other times.
BBS: (215) 374-3735 24 hours
Mail: Kirk A. Wentzel

'Order Form' and the ending screen will just go bye-bye
6. The watermark "Printed by Unregistered Contact Manager" will be removed
from the reports.
7. A laser printed manual.
8. The undying gratitude of our programmers who strive to bring you quality,
useful software at a reasonable cost.
--- Customization:
If you like, we would be happy to give you a quote on customizing Contact
Manager. While CM is a good all-around tool, there may be some companies
or individuals who would prefer to have fields added, deleted, changed, etc.
--- Import/Export Filters:
If you have an existing database, and want to import it into CM or want to
export CM to a specific database or other format, call us. While we intend
to work on some import/export filters ourselves, yours may not be among them.
We'll be happy to quote a price on a specific filter or customize a filter
for your needs.
